“Art Expo XX-XXI”
February – March, 2021
19a Ingorokva Street
Baia Gallery presents two main directions of the Gallery in the exhibition ‘Art Expo XX-XXI Centuries:’ paintings from private collections and works by contemporary artists. The exhibition aims to show the parallels and differences, hidden connections, and obvious influences in the art through artists of different generations, directions, and styles.
The exposition begins with the avant-garde, and the Gallery, for the first time in the Georgian gallery space, presents Wassily Kandinsky’s xylography ‘Lady with a Fan.’ Samples of these replicated graphics are in the Guggenheim Museum in New York, at the Pompidou Center in Paris, and in several private collections. This work created by Kandinsky in Munich in 1903 is a part of his famous xylographic series. It now displays in the Baia Gallery along with David Kakabadze, Petre Otskheli, Kirill Zdanevich.
The exposition also includes the series of painted landscapes ‘Winter’ by Elene Akhvlediani, the impressionist landscape by Oskar Shmerling, Lado Gudiashvili’s compositions, ‘Dante’ by Sergo Kobuladze, two masterpieces by Felix Varlamishvili, the color of which looks like precious stones, works by Tengiz Mirzashvili and Edmond Kalandadze.
The ‘Star fall’ continues with the exposition of the XXI century, where Gogi Aleksi – Meskhishvili’s culturological ‘game’ on the verge of abstraction and figurative drawing and Luca Lazar’s optical mantrism continue the experience of Kandinsky and Kakabadze. The energy of the flower compositions by Guranda Klibadze and the mystical performance of Tato Akhalkatsishvili’s landscapes, the figurative conditionality of Kako Topouria’s lithographs demonstrate the path started by Otskheli and Zdanevich and create a new model of Georgian culture in the modern world. Sometimes it is difficult to understand this model- to move in its labyrinths requires knowledge and emotional access. Therefore, it is essential to follow Misha Gogrichiani’s lateritic – figurative painting quotes ‘Inquire about Art,’ which are our slogan for this exhibition. The exhibition display will change many times during its course, as the paintings will be moved to new collections and replaced by the artists who now create and represent the Georgian culture or are involved in its process.
