Kako Topuria – Tapestry “Blue Smoke”
Weaving: Marina Janashia
Material: Wool, natural dyes
Dimensions: 310 × 440 cm
Date of execution: 2000–2010
History of the Artwork:
In 1998–1999, while in France, Kako Topuria created the composition “Blue Smoke” using felt-tip markers on an old French cotton bedsheet. Based on this composition, he commissioned master tapestry weaver Marina Janashia to weave the tapestry.
The tapestry was woven entirely in a single piece using wool yarn dyed with natural pigments. Due to the complexity of the work, its large scale, and the multitude of details, the weaving process lasted ten years.
The tapestry consists of one central scene and twelve smaller scenes, featuring up to 500 figurative images and numerous intricate details.
In the context of 21 st-century contemporary Georgian art, this work holds a special place because of its artistic execution, technical mastery, and monumental scale.
